Safe Travels
01/29/2008 - By Peter Whyte To ensure your survival in winter you must expect the unexpected, even if you plan to drive in the city.
Always carry in your vehicle: an ice scraper, sturdy snowbrush, matches and candles with a tin to put the candle in; one regular flashlight and another with a flashing amber light to put on the vehicle’s roof if stranded; folding shovel; bag of sand, a blanket; winter gloves; extra washer fluid; booster cables and a fully charged cell phone.
Be aware of weather conditions in your area along your travel route and at your destination. Remember it may be a fine, clear day in your city but 50 km away there could be a blizzard.
Don’t over look your vehicle. Good quality properly inflated tires will help you control when the going gets slippery. If your battery is weak you can bet it will fail you at the worst possible time. Coolant strength and condition can save your engine block from failure while doing a better job of keeping you warm inside the vehicle.
Make a checklist especially before a long trip. Don’t forget to add nonperishable food that is easy to open and to eat.
Have a safe winter!
