Moving is one of the most stressful events in life. It can be even more so for seniors.
Senior moves often need more time and consideration. It is usually emotional because often the move is about downsizing space and possessions. The important thing is to stay organized and calm throughout the move. Here are a few tips to make the move easier:
• Start packing several weeks in advance. By starting to pack early, you won’t become overwhelmed as moving day draws near.
• Plan ahead. The more planned the moving process is, the easier.
• Downsize before you move. In most cases senior moves are into a smaller living space, which means there will be less room. It is easier to start planning for this ahead of time, downsize and purge before the move rather than after you have already moved into a smaller area and have to decide what to keep and what needs to go.
• Wrap small items in colored paper. This prevents items like knick-knacks from becoming lost or thrown out.
• Pack the bed and sheets last. If all of the unpacking does not get finished there will at least be a place to rest.
• Fill the senior's room with personal mementos. Items such as pictures from home will make the transition easier and help their new place feel more comfortable.
• Be patient. If seniors are moving out of there home for the first time in many years it could be an emotional process.
